Marine sex abuser jailed in Japan
Mongolia News.Net Friday 16th May, 2008
A US military court in the Japanese island of Okinawa has sentenced a 38-year-old US marine to four years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a 14-year-old Japanese girl.
Staff Sergeant Tyrone Hadnott, who was cleared of rape and kidnapping, was also dishonourably discharged from the military.
The Japanese authorities decided not to prosecute the marine after the girl dropped the charges.
However, US military decided to court martial Sergeant Hadnott in Okinawa, where the case caused widespread outrage.
There have been numerous incidents involving US military personnel on the small southern island, including the 1995 gang rape of a 12-year-old girl by three US soldiers.
Okinawa is home to more than half the 40,000 US troops in Japan.
The island has recently seen mass protests and a campaign to reduce the number of US troops.
