Asian stocks directionless, Nikkei 225 loses 59 points

NEW YORK, New York - Stocks in the Asian region were flat to weaker on Wednesday.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 lost 58.65 points or 0.28% to 20,618.87.

The Shanghai Composite finished flat, ahead just 0.33 of point or 0.01% at 2,880.33.

The All Ordinaries in Australia did worst of all, falling 54.80 points or 0.83% to 6,572.60.

On forteign exchange markets, the euro weekend to 1.1095. The British pound was changing hands at 1.2132, while the Japanese yen slipped to 106.54.

The Swiss franc eased a tad to 0.9790.

The Australian dollar dipped to 0.6776. The Canadian dollar inched down to 1.3313, while the New Zealand dollar was sharply weaker at 0.6398.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 173.35 points, or 0.66%, to 25,962.44 Tuesday.

The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 23.14 points, or 0.79%, to 2,900.51.

The Nasdaq Composite shed 54.25 points, or 0.68%, to 7,948.56.
