LEGAZPI CITY (PIA) - For the pilot implementation of the 911 emergency hotline in Bicol region, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP-5) and Legazpi City 911 Command center will collaborate for a swift and harmonized system of emergency response.

The BFP- 5 recently held its soft launching of the 911 Geographical Information System Based Emergency Response Management (GIS-BERM) in Legazpi City through a simulation exercise and training of its personnel. This is to fulfill President Duterte's order to institutionalize an emergency hotline.

As stated in Duterte's EO 56, the BFP is the primary responder in conducting fire suppression operations and providing the public with emergency medical services, hazardous materials protection and technical search and rescue services. The Philippine National Police, on the other hand, leads in public safety and crime prevention.

"The system will be utilized for responding to all emergencies nationwide. It was already used at the NCR during the ASEAN Summit," Chief Supt. Joselito Cortez, director for information and communication technology (ICT) of BFP national headquarters, said.

Cortez added that the 911 GIS-BERM is designed to track real-time reporting of emergencies, rescue operations and will also serve as a data base. It also maps out the exact location of incidents as well as the responders.

He explained that with the system they can strategize the easiest route in reaching the location of incidents, thus a faster response time.

"The BFP National HQ chose Bicol as the second region to be trained and developed for the 911 GIS-BERM. The system will also be cascaded to all city and municipal fire stations," Fire Senior Supt. Renato B. Corpuz, BFP-5 assistant director for administration and operations, said.

For now, the BFP and the local government of Legazpi City are working together for system development and harmonization as it waits for the approval of the Department of the Interior and Local Government to grant the use of 911 hotline.

Corpuz said the BFP is continuously preparing its personnel and ICT equipment for the 911 GIS-BERM.

Legazpi City is the first local government unit in Bicol to implement the 911 command center. (PIA-5)
