JALALABAD, Afghanistan -- Authorities in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province destroyed more than 24 tons of drug including heroin and hashish by fire outside the provincial capital Jalalabad on Saturday.

"Police in Nangarhar have collected 24,597 kg illicit drug including heroin, hashish, opium poppy and objects used in manufacturing heroin over the past one year and all the contrabands were set ablaze publicly outside Jalalabad city today," the provincial government said in a statement.

PARIS -- French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that footage of several police officers beating up a black music producer was "unacceptable" and "shameful" for the country.

"The images we have all seen of the aggression against Michel Zecler are unacceptable, they are shameful for all of us. France should never allow violence or brutality, no matter who it comes from. France should never let hate or racism prosper," Macron said in a statement on his Facebook account.

UNITED NATIONS -- A United Nations spokesman on Friday called for exercising restraint and avoiding escalation in the Middle East region following the assassination of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

"We have noted the reports that an Iranian nuclear scientist has been assassinated near Tehran today. We urge restraint and the need to avoid any actions that could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region," Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said when responding to a question related to the assassination.
