KATHMANDU, Nepal - Around ten percent of residents of Kathmandu who received the first dose of AstraZeneca or Vero Cell vaccine did not receive the second dosage within the recommended time frame.
According to an official estimate, the amount was extraordinarily high until a few months ago.
"Over 80,000 people who took the first dose had not taken the second dose until a few months ago," the chief of Kathmandu Health Office Sambhu Kafle said. "But a lot of people have taken the second dose after we started supplying the vaccine regularly."
He added that around 10,000 to 15,000 people have still not sought second doses.
What's more alarming is that the Health Ministry does not know the whereabouts of the patients who received the first dose of vaccine but have yet to receive the second dosage. The Ministry of Health does not have a record to follow those who do not seek second dosages.
Sources from the Kathmandu Health Office previously told the Post that about 40% of those over 65 who received the first shot of Covishield between March 7 and 15 did not request the second dose. To prevent the vaccines from expiring, health officials gave Covishield doses to people of all ages, including college students.
According to public health specialists, government authorities are unclear about the thousands of persons who missed the second shot.
