PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia's former Defense Minister and current head of the Hayastan faction in parliament, Seyran Ohanyan, commented on the new legislative change reducing mandatory military service from 24 to 18 months. He stated that any reform aimed at improving military service conditions is acceptable if it aligns with the country's current situation and existing challenges.

"Armenia's border defense has expanded by nearly 100 kilometers. In addition to the 283 kilometers around Nagorno-Karabakh, the border with Azerbaijan now extends from Zod to Meghri. Based on this, we must decide on our national security strategy, and the Ministry of Defense must conduct a strategic defense review and organize its entire staffing process accordingly," Ohanyan said, as reported by Pastinfo.

According to him, combat positions in the Armed Forces are currently filled primarily by reserve personnel and volunteers, but this model negatively affects discipline within the military.

"This is not just about border protection; it's about fulfilling combat missions. These tasks are carried out based on the Armed Forces' operational plans to address the challenges facing our country."

Regarding the new personnel certification system, Ohanyan noted it creates unequal conditions in the military. "Commanders can receive higher salaries, but their troops, especially those stationed at the border, must also be paid well. The solution lies in increasing the base salary," he added.

Starting January 1, 2026, the duration of mandatory military service will be reduced by six months, from two years to one and a half.
